Teachers need to know how to select types of questions open or closed - and what are the appropriate starting points.

An open question -

  • may allow more opportunity for pupils to show the extent of their understanding
  • may be more useful in identifying learning difficulties or lack of understanding
  • may stimulate higher order thinking and learning
  • will encourage language development because it requires a lengthier response
  • may also encourage the expression of feelings and emotions.

A closed question -

  • may be more useful in judging prior knowledge
  • may be more useful for testing precise recall
  • may help rapid repetition of facts and help memorisation.
