School Transport

Pupils resident in Middlesbrough who attend the appropriate primary or
secondary school would normally receive free transport if the shortest walking
distance from home to school is two miles or more for primary schools, and
three miles or more for secondary schools for a single journey. Assistance is
limited to one return journey per school day. Consideration will be given in
other cases in exceptional circumstances, taking into account such factors as the
nature of the available routes.

If a pupil attends school by parental preference, the Authority would not assist
with travelling costs unless the school is beyond the statutory walking distance
from home and nearer than the school offered by the Authority.

The Authority does not normally give free transport to pupils admitted to
religious denominational schools out of parental preference if their parent/guardian does not adhere to that religion. In such circumstances, the
appropriate school will be deemed to be the community school.

The Authority reserves the right to consult with the diocesan authorities in
arriving at decisions on individual cases.

In some cases, spare places on coaches contracted to take pupils eligible for free
transport to school may be taken up by pupils who do not qualify for free travel
following the purchase of a concessionary fare permit. Further details of the
scheme are available from the School Transport Section, Middlesbrough Council,
