Special Education Provision
All schools have procedures in place to identify and assess pupils’ special
educational needs. In a small number of cases, additional support is required
from the Local Education Authority.
Key aims are to identify pupils with special educational needs at the earliest
possible opportunity, to work in consultation with parents and to educate
children in mainstream schools, wherever possible.
For a small number of children, a place in a special school will be the best option. Such a decision will be made only after a thorough assessment of the child’s needs during which the parents have an opportunity to express their views and preferences. Wherever possible, however, children’s special needs will be met in main stream schools.
Where parents have concerns about their child’s special educational needs, they
should, in the first instance, contact the Head Teacher of their child’s school.
General enquiries can be made to the Special Education Section of the Children,
Families and Learning Department, Tel. 201833 or 201830.
A range of booklets for parents can be obtained by post from the Children,
Families and Learning Department, PO Box 69, Vancouver House, Gurney Street,
Middlesbrough, TS1 1EL or in person at Middlesbrough Teaching and Learning
Centre, Tranmere Avenue, Middlesbrough, TS3 8PB. These booklets are also
available for reference in schools and local libraries.
