Admission Zones and Parental Preferences

Pupils living within the admission zone of a school are not guaranteed a place at
that school. In most cases it will be possible to comply with parental preferences.
However, where it is not possible to agree all requests, places will be offered
according to the following criteria in priority order.

(i) admission of pupils with statements of Special Educational Needs
where a specific school is named in the Statement

(ii) children looked after for whom the school has been expressed as a preference, unless to admit the child would cause a breach of the
infant class size legislation; (classes must be 30 pupils or under)

(iii) pupils permanently resident in the Admission Zone who express a preference for that school (proof of address may be required)

(iv) pupils who will have a brother and/or sister or step brother or sister resident
at the same address attending the school in September 2006.
(v) pupils with social and/or medical reasons for attending the school,
which in the later circumstances are substantiated by the LEA medical advisors.
(vi) pupils who reside closest to the particular school, “as the crow flies”.

When distinguishing between people within the same criteria the person with the
highest second criteria will be admitted ie. a pupil living within the admission zone who had a brother or sister attending the school in September 2006 will have a higher criteria than a pupil living within the zone who does not have a brother or sister attending that school.

The Authority will consider action should false information be submitted in order to secure a place at a particular school.

Copies of the relevant admission zones are available from Children, Families and
Learning Department, P.O. Box 69, Vancouver House, Gurney Street,
Middlesbrough, TS1 1EL, Tel 01642 728094.

When it is not possible for the Authority to comply with parental preferences,
parents may appeal to an Independent Appeal Committee. Parents can only
appeal once in any academic year, unless there has been a change of
circumstances relavant to the application.
