How can I become a teacher?
Teaching is a degree level profession. If you are a graduate you may wish to consider completing a PGCE or flexible PGCE. Other routes to Qualified Teacher Status include GTP and SCITT. Please note that you will require GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths (and science for primary teaching if born after 1979). If you intend to teach at secondary level then your degree needs to be in a curriculum subject.
If you are not a graduate you may:
- Complete a degree that has a QTS component
- Complete a degree and then PGCE , flexible PGCE, GTP or SCITT
- Complete a foundation degree then RTP.
For all of the above you still require the aforementioned qualifications in English and maths. Visit the TDA website for advice and information.
SCITT is school centered teacher training. the Middlesbrough SCITT based at Macmillan offer teacher training in Math’s, Science and ICT. It is a full time course for trainees. If they are interested in these subjects then they can go on the SCITT website and find out how to apply etc through the Macmillan website and the SCITT link.GTP programme this is graduate teacher training programme, these programmes offer other subjects and are school based. If they can get a self-funded place through their school they can get a non teachers salary. To find out more try looking at Carmel's CTTP site.
Redcar & Cleveland run a very successful GTP Programme check out the Booklet please see attached
Another alternative is the open university PGCE: they even equate teaching experience in schools to modules and the trainee completes through distance learning and arranges placements to suit their availability. It is quite flexible. This is detailed on the OU website.
This site was praised last week when several consultants who had seen it working well in classrooms.

Consultants recommended BT Better World for teaching speaking and listening. It has some great resources on and is especially useful for teaching Podcast, creating a website and also functional Skills – ‘The Personal Skills Journey.' It is well worth a look!
If you have not already seen it – ‘Read, Write, Think' has some good resources on it. The link attached has a series of lessons and resources on satire and The Simpsons.
