What happens if your child is referred to the Hearing Impaired Service. In all cases, referrals to the Hearing Impaired Service are made following medical diagnosis of a hearing loss. We do not accept referrals unless a child’s parent has signed a form to consent to the referral being made. Babies and very young children If your baby has a hearing loss diagnosed by the Neonatal Hearing Screening Programme, we will contact you by telephone. This usually happens within 48 hours of diagnosis. If attempts at making telephone contact are unsuccessful then we will write to you asking you to contact us. We will arrange to visit you and your baby your home, this visit normally takes place within one week. This first home visit is carried out by two Teachers of the Deaf and involves general discussion with you about your child’s diagnosed hearing loss and how the Hearing Impaired Service may be involved. You will be sent a written report following the visit. This report will also be sent to the person who referred your child and to other professionals who know your child. If your child is going to receive regular support then the Head of Service will allocate a Teacher of the Deaf to make visits to you. School aged childrenWe will arrange an appointment for a Teacher of the Deaf to see your child in school. You will be informed in advance and will be given the opportunity to be present during this initial visit. We aim to begin the assessment within three working weeks, however from time to time it may take longer. If we are unable to begin the assessment within eight working weeks we will write to you again. The assessment may involve more than one visit from a Teacher of the Deaf. We will write a report following the assessment. Copies will be sent to you, to the person who made the referral and to any other professionals we know are involved. You should receive the report within two working weeks once the assessment is complete. For school-aged children, we will also send you a record of our findings, called a Record of Visit. We send further copies to the Audiology Department, the school and any other professionals involved, such as Speech and Language Therapists. Following the assessment the H.I. Service Panel will decide an appropriate level of ongoing support for your child. We will write and let you know what this is. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
