History of Service
Background Information
Middlesbrough Hearing Impaired Service was established in 1971 as an outreach service from Beverley School for the Deaf.
Since 1996 the Peripatetic Service has been directly managed by Middlesbrough Council as the lead Authority on behalf of the four boroughs within the Teesside area (Middlesbrough, Stockton & Billingham, Redcar & Cleveland and Hartlepool).
The Peripatetic Service is part of a continuum of educational provision for deaf children. The Service is part of the Council's Children, Families and Learning Department. The provision comprises of the Peripatetic Service to mainstream and other special schools, and the Resource Bases at Sunnyside Primary School & Kings Academy. The management of the Resource Bases has been delegated to the Head Teachers of the schools.
The Peripatetic Service is centrally funded; each Borough contributes to the funding in line with a Service Level Agreement.
