School Transport

What do we do?

The Middlesbrough Integrated Transport Unit deals with home to school transport. Transport is arranged for pupils who qualify as a result of the Local Authority's statutory duty or the Authority's Home to School Transport Policy.

The Unit currently arranges home to school transport for approximately 1,600 pupils and does so by either taxi, minibus or coach transport. The Authority provides bus escorts to supervise and assist pupils on a number of the transport routes, dependent on the needs of the pupils.

Who qualifies for 'free' Home to School Transport

Any pupil (aged 11 to 16 at secondary school) who attend their admission zone school and live outside the statutory walking distance of three miles (by the shortest walking route) will receive assistance with home to school transport. Pupils from lower income families (i.e. the pupil is eligible for free school meals or parents are in receipt of the maximum level of Working Tax Credit) may qualify for free home to school transport if they live over two miles and below six miles from the school they attend and the school is one of the three nearest suitable schools. If a pupil from a lower income family attends the nearest school preferred by their parents on the grounds of religion or belief and the school is between two and fifteen miles from their home they may qualify for free home to school transport.

Any pupil (aged 5 to 11 at primary school) who attend their admission zone school and live outside the statutory walking distance of two miles (by the shortest walking route) will receive assistance with home to school transport.

Pupils who are subject to a statement of special educational needs will qualify for free home to school transport if transport is identified as a non-educational provision within their statement of special educational needs.

Pupils with a specific medical condition will receive free home to school transport if the Authority's Paediatric Consultant supports their request.
