Sound Training for Reading
Brief description of Sound Training
Pupils are explicitly taught syllabification along with the meaning of prefixes, suffixes and root words. The delivery is very intensive and very repetitive using multi-sensory teaching methods. Pupils read cards at speed, everything is timed, highly structured and focussed.
Target group/
Upper KS2, KS3 and KS4 pupils who are falling behind expected levels in reading.
Timescale
Pupils in groups of four receive intensive tuition for 1 hour per week for six weeks in secondary and 45 minutes per eight weeks in primary. ( 6 hrs in total )
Assessments
Pupils reading ages (using NFER graded word test or WRAT 4) are recorded pre and post intervention.
Current position
The average reading gain, involving over 140 pupils during 2009/2010 was 27 months.

Details are published in ‘What works for pupils with literacy difficulties.' DCSF 00688-2007BKT-EN. Figures quoted there are from 2004 – 5. The programme has developed since then and students are now achieving greater gains.

Sound Training for Reading is delivered to our Middlesbrough Secondary Schools via the Learning and Language Teachers.
