Middlesbrough's School Meals service has the recipe for success. It has been ranked as the best in the country.

School meals staff in Middlesbrough were placed in the top spot out of 93 participating local authorities for encouraging children and young people to eat healthily in the Audit Commission 2008 School Survey.

The survey is completed by headteachers and gauges schools perceptions of council services for children.

Angela Blower, Catering Manager for Middlesbrough Council, said: "The Audit Commission School Survey not only provides us with the opportunity to ask schools for their feedback, but also allows us to compare our performance with other local authorities"

"We are delighted the responses to the survey from Middlesbrough schools - our customers - have placed us as top authority for school catering in the country"

"We are only a small team but we are passionate about the service we provide and the commitment and enthusiasm of our excellent kitchen staff has resulted in incredibly high standards."

The survey was conducted online during a seven - week period in the summer. It examined responses to questions covering six areas: being healthy; staying safe; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution; achieving economic well - being and service management.

The school meals service was judged on all aspects of the service from the food, training and how the service impacts on the health and welfare of the young people in Middlesbrough schools.

The information gained from the survey is used by managers and individual teams to examine and assess their performance.

Well done to everyone in the School Catering Service!

LACA Education Catering Marketing Award 2007

Congratulations to the Catering Management Team  for receiving a runner up award.  Middlesbrough Catering Management Team received a runner up award from the Local Authority Caterers Association for the marketing of services by sharing a DVD with Head Teachers, Governors and Parents informing them of the improvments within the service.

Congratulations to catering staff for completing a Nurtition Course and also a Health & Hygiene Course.

St Clare's Primary School kitchen won the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) Award, for the 'Catering Team of the Year'.  This is a National Award and was won in recognition of their work promoting healthy eating within the school.

In addition to promoting the healthy eating messages, the creation of the Salad Bars has encouraged a greater awareness of suitable food combinations.

The children are able to choose two protein items, which are served to them, they then move along the salad bar helping themselves to which salad bowls they would like.  Cooks or Assistants serving on the Salad Bars do check to ensure that children have taken sufficient and are going to have an adequate meal.

Congratulations

Congratulations to all the Catering Staff for completing their updated training on Health & Hygiene, Manual Handling and COSHH.
